WakeMed Heart Tower and Children’s Hospital
This $99-million, 185,000-square-foot addition to Raleigh’s Wake Medical Campus houses the first children’s hospital in Wake County and connects to the existing hospital in nine places, housing a new main entrance and two-story entry lobby, an expanded pediatric intensive care unit, acute care beds, and two-floors of shell space for future growth. The project also includes a $17-million, 1,200-space, precast concrete superstructure parking deck built on bearing cast-in-place retaining walls and supported on driven piles. An artful pedestrian bridge connects the two over the healthcare campus roadway infrastructure.
This project received an American Council of Engineering Companies, North Carolina Chapter Honors Award.
