Wake Technical Community College’s 117-acre Northern Wake Campus along Louisburg Road, just north of I‑540, is the nation’s first multi-building campus to have all buildings LEED certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. We are proud to say that more than 7,000 students take classes here in the most environmentally-friendly classrooms in the state. CALYX provided civil and structural engineering as well as survey, transportation planning, and environmental services.

The campus master plan that was developed in eight phases, comprising a total of 18 buildings with 1,200,000 SF and 4,500 parking spaces. The buildings, walkways, landscaping, roads, drives, parking lots, and parking decks were arranged for proper scale and proportion to give an overall campus feel with a sense of place between the buildings. The master plan includes a four-lane main road, the adjacent parking areas, the buildings, and the space between the buildings. Special consideration was given to enhancing the existing wetlands and Neuse River buffers to create visual opportunities from the terraces and spaces beyond the buildings. The master plan was developed to allow safe and easy vehicular access to the campus via a four-lane main road located along the property’s northern edge. Parking lots are oriented directly off the main road. Walks through the parking lots are framed with landscaping to reduce the heat island effect. An inner loop road separates the parking lots from the buildings and allows vehicular service access to and from the campus facilities. All buildings are located interior to the site with views to the wetlands and other natural vegetative areas, which provides a safe separation between vehicular and pedestrian traffic and allows the site to be developed into a successful campus setting.
