SC 38 / US 501 Widening
CALYX provided a wide range of services on this hurricane evacuation route, involving 2.1 miles of new location for SC 38 and 3.2 miles of road widening on US 501. Our design widened US 501 using a five-lane curb-and-gutter and pushing the proposed centerline to the opposite side of the existing road to avoid a historical site and a school. The firm was able to reduce congestion by designing a two-lane flyover bridge that contained two ramps and a loop, enabling traffic to merge smoothly through the existing intersection. Drainage design included seven miles of a combination of curb-and-gutter, four-lane divided highway and five-lane shoulder section. CALYX conducted Hydrologic Engineering Center River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) flood studies at five different stream crossings and oversaw the erosion control design.
