Located within the environmentally-sensitive and remote Cape Hatteras National Seashore, 32,800 square feet of bridges were constructed using precast concrete elements for both the superstructure and substructure. One of the first North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) projects to use this type of technology, its unique approach allowed all seven bridges to be replaced in just 64 days. This project received the National Achievement Award from the National Partnership for Highway Quality (NPHQ), recognizing service quality and expediency including surveying, categorical exclusions, environmental services, structural, roadway, traffic control design, geotechnical investigation and permit drawings. Both the National Park Service and NCDOT were key project partners.
