Kerr Avenue Widening
Improvements to this 1.7-mile stretch of extremely congested roadway with 16 intersections included constructing a median, two additional lanes, striped bicycle lanes, sidewalks on both sides of the road and a half-clover interchange at Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway. A quadrant roadway design was used at the intersection of Kerr Avenue and Market Street to enhance bicycle and pedestrian travel and safety. Only a few such designs exist currently in North Carolina. CALYX also was responsible for documenting impacts to the natural and human environment. An extensive public involvement program was developed that included a toll-free project information line, three public workshops and state-of-the-art simulations that illustrated the new traffic pattern with the quadrant design in place.
