Charlotte, NC

CALYX’s design of one of the first single point urban interchanges in the state earned the Honors Award for Engineering Excellence in Transportation from the Consulting Engineers Council of North Carolina. A major access road to the Charlotte Coliseum and Charlotte Douglas International Airport, this complex project included many design challenges to accommodate the nearly 100,000 cars that travel this road per day in the Charlotte area. To answer this challenge, CALYX developed effective traffic control and construction staging methods and worked through right-of-way constraints. CALYX also met the client’s accelerated project schedule, completing initial preliminary plans 70 days ahead of schedule and final plans on time. The firm facilitated more than 15 meetings between the North Carolina Department of Transportation and the Charlotte Department of Transportation to track project progress and activities. Final construction estimates revealed the project was completed within 0.3 percent of the initial bid, reflecting the accuracy of CALYX’s plans and ability to meet the prime contractor’s expectations.

This project won an Honors Award for Engineering Excellence in Transportation from the American Council of Engineering Companies, North Carolina Chapter.
